It's kind of like experimenting on animals and turning them in to another animal but with super enhances traits

This one reminded me a little bit of The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells, but with a different direction.

State of Fear was a decent novel for it's time, but the actual insanity ensuing since it's publication (jet set climate summits, Greta Thunberg, and the deification of 'climate scientists') is much stranger than what MC visualized as fiction. I would have loved to see his take on COVID

Agreed, I guess the closest we can come to it is his Andromeda Strain, but that's different in that the virus is contained in an underground lab early in the story. It's been adapted twice once for film, the other TV.

Yes, unfortunately he died of cancer back in 2008. There were 3-4 books of his he was working on at the time that were published posthumously, which may be part of the confusion he was still alive.
