Jerry Goldsmith

By Brian . Created on May 31, 2021
Next in a continuing series of polls about film score composers is Jerry Goldsmith. Over the course of his career, Goldsmith received 18 total Academy Award nominations. He's know for both film and TV, and likely another of those guys you know the tune, but was not aware who wrote it. He's a master at creating a place or mood via music. In any case below are a few of my favorites. Feel free to add your own.

Can't beat Star Trek

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was sort of the re-launch of the franchise after the classic series. Goldsmith's theme for this would later get used as the theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation and well as some of the musical themes for races like the Klingons. He'd carry on his connection to Star Trek doing the theme for Star Trek Voyager as well as scores for other Star Trek films. In any case the main theme...

Of these, I’d pick Mulan. Another one is The Mummy :)

This one had a rocky trail., Stephen Schwartz was first considered, but got involved with Price of Egypt. Danny Elfman and Thomas Newman were next. Rachel Portman was finally selected but dropped out when she became pregnant. Matthew Wilder and David Zippel ended up doing the songs, while Goldsmith provided the score. But I babble. This is one darn great score, weaving the heritage a...

Planet of the Apes is one of my favorite sci-fi films as well. As for the score, it can be eerie and unnerving at times, more a mix of sound than actual music. Goldsmith used a variety of techniques to achieve this, looping drums into an echoplex, using the orchestra to imitate the grunting sounds of apes, having horns blown without mouthpieces, and instructing the woodwind players to finger their keys without u...

Poll--- are these survey sites paying out or are they crafty at getting your info then disqualifying you. So that inevitably all sites become similar.

Polls are different than surveys- they are just for the amusement of those who use Ipsos as a survey site. As for paying out, I have never had an issue with Ipsos or any other survey site. You're not going to get rich from any, and surveys are hit or miss on whether you qualify, it boils down to your profile and what the survey is actually about.

It did win several Academy Awards, including picture, director and actor. As mentioned below, Jerry Goldsmith's score was nominated, but lost to Love Story.

Titanic!!!!

James Horner did the score for Titanic, but I agree it is a great one. It won various awards, and the soundtrack was a best seller for a while, which is unusual for a movie score.
