I think of downtown as where a city was established, but that's just me. What they look like or what is there could vary wildly. In my case the groceries and such are more the suburbs, while downtown is private run places and government buildings.

Mostly little local shops on our public square to include two taverns, a Jewelry store, several relators, car ins. agents, travel agent, small restaurant, barber and flea market stores for antiques. Nothing to get excited about as far as I'm concerned.

There use to be a lot more but Wal-Mart sucked the heart and soul out of the small businesses. Now it's all gone and Wal-Mart has moved to Decatur to a Super Center. And of course there is little left behind.
